Guelph to Halifax

Burnt out from his studies at the University of Guelph,  Ben decided to bike from Guelph, ON to Halifax, NS  in the summer of 2015 out of a desire to discover more of his country and reconnect with the things he loves most.

Seeing an opportunity to give back to his community, he decided to use the bicycle tour to raise money for a charitable cause: mental health awareness, an issue that he felt drawn to after his experiences at U of Guelph.

He committed to raising money for the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA). Completely alone.

Ben launched a grassroots fundraising campaign that pulled in a total of over $10 thousand, most of it in the form of bar change.

A nightly staple in Downtown Guelph, in the weeks leading up to his departure Ben held a homemade sign outside bars and restaurants that provided details about his tour.

Ben's campaign became a hit with  Guelph locals, who shared his message on social media. It didn't take long for Ben to generate some serious buzz.

With momentum on his side, he covered 2,000 kilometers in less than three weeks, stopping to make camp in small towns and parks along the way.

The tour was a success. But immediately, Ben knew he wasn't finished.

Guelph to Vancouver

Fast forward three years and Ben is now gearing up to finish his cross-country bicycle tour—this time for a cause of his own. Raising money for the Stratas Foundation, Ben Cowderoy and Stratas co-founder Liam Hunt are looking to take their message nationwide in May 2019.

Looking To Raise

$50,000

In 2019, Ben and Liam are cycling over 4,500 kilometers from Guelph to Vancouver, BC. Their tentative goal is to fundraise $50,000 to help fund 25 scholars’ research. All expenses incurred during the tour will be 100% self-funded. The tour will embody what Stratas is about: discovery, responsibility, healthy living, and community.

We can’t wait to get things started. Check out the map above to see where Ben and Liam are headed, including their various camping spots along the way.

Join Ben, Liam, and the Stratas Foundation in creating a better, healthier, and more resilient Canada.
